Memphis [Memphis]
the largest city in the US state of ↑Tennessee. It is on the ↑Mississippi River in the extreme south-west of the state. Memphis is an agricultural and commercial centre established in 1819 and named after the ancient Egyptian city. It is called the ‘home of the ↑blues ’ because W C Handy lived there. Martin Luther ↑King was murdered in Memphis in 1968, and Elvis Presley died there in 1977 at his home, ↑Graceland.
